21 Days of Prayer & Fasting is For You

21 Days of Prayer & Fasting is great place to start pressing into God. As we fast and set aside time each day to pray, He will move like never before. We will see God move in our church, relationships, work, families, and every area of our lives.

Fasting

Biblical fasting always has to do with abstaining from food for spiritual purposes. It helps us pursue God and see breakthrough in our lives. Remember, your personal fast should present a level of challenge, but it is very important to know your body, your options, and, most importantly, to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do.

Types of Fasts

Complete Fast
In this type of fast, you don’t eat or drink at all. This is an extreme fast and should only be done for very short periods of time. This should never be engaged in unless God is commanding you and should only be done in consultation with a medical professional.

Normal Fast
In this type of fast, you only drink water. This is the most common fast in the Bible. If you have not fasted before, consider doing a selective or partial fast instead and work your way up to this. People typically incorporate some type of fruit juice or broth into their diet when they do this.

Selective Fast
This type of fast involves removing certain elements from your diet. One example of a selective fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweets, and bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food. This is our recommendation for those who are not experienced in fasting.

Partial Fast
This fast is sometimes called the “Jewish Fast” and involves abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning and afternoon. This can either correlate to specific times of the day, such as 6:00 am to 3:00 pm, or from sunup to sundown.

Soul Fast
This fast is a great option if you do not have much experience fasting food, have health issues that prevent you from fasting food, or if you wish to refocus certain areas of your life that are out of balance. For example, you might choose to stop using social media or watching television for the duration of the fast and then carefully bring that element back into your life in healthy doses at the conclusion of the fast.

Timing of a Fast

At Sent, we encourage fasting during our annual 21 Days of Prayer & Fasting. This is a pivotal season of focused prayer as a church family. You may also choose to fast at other times during the year for your own spiritual development. It’s very typical to fast a single meal, a whole day, or three days or more. The timing of your fast is not as important as the strength of your focus on God as you fast.

Prayer

Biblically, prayer really takes two main shapes. First, it’s a way that we can experience intimacy and relationship with God. Prayer in this sense is just communicating or fellowshipping with God. It’s walking with God in relationship. Secondly, it’s a way that we can contend for God to change situations on earth. It’s interceding for God to move. Prayer is both communicating with God (both in listening and talking) and inviting God to move in our world.

How to Pray

1 - The Lord’s Prayer
Pray the Lord’s Prayer in your own words.

Matthew 6:9-13 ESV
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  • “Our Father in heaven” - Center your heart on God and connect with Him

  • ”Hallowed be Your name” - Worship God and declare His holiness

  • ”Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” - Pray for God’s will to be done in your life, your home, your community, and the world

  • ”Give us this day our daily bread” - Ask God to provide for your needs

  • ”Forgive us our debts, as we have also forgiven our debtors” - Forgive others and receive God’s forgiveness

  • ”And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” - Engage in spiritual warfare

2 - A.C.T.S.
Pray adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication.

  • Adoration - Spend time worshipping the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and telling Him what you adore about Him.

  • Confession - Confess your sins to God. He will be faithful and just to forgive you of your sins. (1 John 1:9)

  • Thanksgiving - Thank God for all of His gifts and blessings.

  • Supplication - Present your needs to God.

3 - Scripture
Pray as you read Scripture and pray Scriptures back to God.

4 - Prayer List
Pray through a prayer list. Divide it into different categories and pray for a different subject in each category each day of the week.

Examples of Categories

  • Personal (pray for different personal needs each day of the week)

  • Spouse

  • Children

  • “Mountains” in your life

  • Family members

  • Friends

  • Pastors/Leaders

  • Churches/Ministries

  • Missionaries

  • Your Church (pray for a different element of the church each day of the week)

5 - Guided Prayer
Pray through a guided prayer that is crafted by someone else. We recommend downloading Lectio 365 and praying through their daily prayers.
